There is no better time than the holidays to open a special bottle of wine.
Many times we hoard bottles to open and then when the time arrives continue to not open them. Shakespeare said it best, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.” Instead of crying into your wine glass because you finally decided to open a bottle you have been saving think in new wine terms. “This bottle I will enjoy with myself and it will be my treat to me. It is a party and I am the only guest.”
I’m guilty like most people in holding on to wine. I like to purchase, collect, and wait to drink many of my wines. It’s a hard habit to break. It seems that as wine drinkers we are always on the hunt or the “new” wine instead of embracing and drinking we have already purchased. We buy and drink wine for a reason. Wine is communal and nothing is wrong with communing with yourself at a time when it is all about other people.
Instead of waiting for Christmas or New Year’s Eve enjoy your wine now. I like to call opening a bottle of Moscato d’Asti a party of one. It is all in how you look at it. I like to first start with a beautiful place setting, linens, and appetizers and an aperitif. Music is always a must. Music sets a scene and it is also relaxing. Next is the wine and a beautiful wine glass. The party of one means pulling out the pretty wine glass instead of your everyday.
Moscato d’Asti deserves to set the scene. It is the small moments that make up life and all its celebrations. As you look through your wine and discover you have been keeping your Moscato d’Asti for a special occasion, realize you are that occasion.
